The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
