Doris Makes Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as Farrell opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris should the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
