Chainsaw Man Dominates American Box Office in First Weekend
Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million milestone worldwide, hitting a international earnings of $108M during its debut. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Notable U.S. and Worldwide Earnings
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed $18.2 million domestically after a powerful $5.2M Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Globally, the MAPPA-produced feature earned $14.7M across 46 international territories, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M overseas, $18.2M domestic). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.
Benchmarks to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies
Promotional firm a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, comparing the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and started with a nearly identical $18M stateside. Reze Arc’s debut weekend is in line with that marker, while its $108M worldwide total currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6M overall box office. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will match the numbers of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for Sony.
Promotional Strategies Fuel Performance
Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged community involvement to propel their leadership at the animated movie market. This film's marketing campaign began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a significant involvement at NYCC showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and content creators as well after the concluding day of the event.
Looking Ahead
2025 stands as a big year for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has another feature-length anime debuting in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
