Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can continue to cope with fitness issues following revealing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The German forward has been sidelined since August following an operation on his knee. Initially expected to come back earlier in December, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his training and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This update creates a dilemma for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker last weekend, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also available post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Linger

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the backline for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has resulted in a much stronger position to handle such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

When asked if more options was benefiting their championship push, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, since the current term has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at this level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Speaking about the complication noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

He shared his personal desire to welcome him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, in my view, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I see him suffer being outside.”
